USCG – BWMS improvement practicability review
The US Coast Guard issued a notice announcing that it has conducted a Practicability Review, concluding that, at this time, technology to achieve a significant improvement in ballast water management system (BWMS) efficacy onboard vessels cannot be practicably implemented. 81 Fed. MARAD – surrender of Port Dolphin DWP license
The Maritime Administration (MARAD) issued a notice stating that Port Dolphin Energy LLC has surrendered its license for its proposed port Dolphin Deepwater Port DWP). 81 Fed. Reg. 29324 [https://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2016-05-11/pdf/2016-11079.pdf] (5/11/16).
Australia – new icebreaker ordered
The Australian Antarctic Division issued a news release stating that a contract has been signed for Australia’s new icebreaker, with the ship due to arrive in mid-2020. (4/28/16) [http://www.antarctica.gov.au/news/2016/contract-signed-for-australias-new-icebreaker].
Indonesia – tanker hijacking suspects arrested
The ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre issued a report concerning the arrest of suspects in the hijacking of the tanker Hai Soon 12. The tanker was hijacked on 7 May off Pulau Belitung, Indonesia while en route the South Pacific. On 9 May, the tanker was intercepted and boarded by the Indonesian Navy. The crew of 12 was rescued unharmed. The tanker and its cargo have been secured. Nine suspects were found on board and arrested.
