NAP – major marine oil spill response

clip_image004 The National Academies Press (NAP) published the Proceedings of a workshop entitled: “Preparing for a Rapid Response to Major Marine Oil Spills: Protecting and Assessing the Health and Well-Being of Communities”. (10/30/17) [].

NAP – sustaining ocean observations

clip_image004[1] The National Academies Press (NAP) issued a report entitled: “Sustaining Ocean Observations to Understand Future Changes in Earth’s Climate”. The report notes that flat or declining funding is creating challenges to continuing observation of the world’s oceans. (10/31/17) [].

IMO – developing GHG reduction strategy

clip_image006 The IMO issued a news release reporting on the progress made at the second meeting of the International Working Group on Reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from Ships. (10/30/17) [].

Canada – Wrecked, Abandoned, or Hazardous Vessels Act

clip_image008 Transport Canada issued a news release stating that the Wrecked, Abandoned, or Hazardous Vessels Act has been introduced in Parliament. The measure will prohibit vessel abandonment and strengthen owner responsibility for hazardous vessels and wrecks. (10/30/17) [].

    logo11 Liquefaction

    In the October 2018 edition of Maritime Reporter and Engineering News, you can find my article entitled "Liquefaction". The article discusses the shocking number of bulk carriers that have suddenly and catastrophically been lost at sea in recent years. The known or suspected cause of these tragic losses has been liquefaction of cargo. Despite efforts of the IMO, insurers, and trade associations, these losses continue. Installing a longitudinal bulkhead in each cargo hold would reduce the risk of liquefaction and the consequent loss of ships, cargo, and crews.
